The Role of CFCIB in Achieving Burundi’s Vision 2040–2060 for Economic Self-Reliance and Development

As Burundi charts its course toward economic self-reliance by 2040 and sustainable development by 2060, the Federal Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Burundi (CFCIB), under the leadership of Hon. Olivier Suguru, Member of Parliament, has proven to be a driving force in aligning the private sector with this national ambition.

Honorable  Olivier SUGURU

Between 2022 and 2025, CFCIB made significant strides in strengthening its institutional framework, expanding its reach, and building meaningful partnerships both locally and internationally. Major organizations such as ABEF, ASSUR, and RIM were granted the autonomy to operate as independent sectoral chambers, while major enterprises including BUJUMBURA BUSINESS PARK and BURUNDI INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION joined the federation, reinforcing its strategic capacity.

On the international stage, CFCIB signed cooperation agreements with chambers of commerce from countries including Morocco, Qatar, Kenya, and Abu Dhabi. Thanks to these efforts, Burundi rejoined the East African Business Council (EABC) after settling six years of arrears, with CFCIB now proudly holding the vice-chair position within the regional body.

CFCIB’s vision extended beyond diplomatic ties. Through strategic engagements with global development partners—such as the World Bank, AfDB, UNDP, ENABEL, and TRADEMARK AFRICA—projects were initiated to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), including the launch of iSOKO, a regional digital trade platform hosted within CFCIB’s infrastructure.

CFCIB also played a central role in organizing major business events such as the COMESA Business Forum in Bujumbura and “Muzinga Day,” a national initiative promoting local entrepreneurship. Its involvement in the establishment of the National Public-Private Dialogue Framework, sanctioned by a presidential decree, is a testament to its commitment to fostering inclusive economic governance.

Hon. Olivier Suguru’s leadership is characterized by patriotism, strategic foresight, and a hands-on approach. His dynamic efforts are laying a solid foundation for a prosperous Burundi, where investment is encouraged, entrepreneurship is empowered, and the private sector is an equal partner in national development.

Looking ahead, CFCIB plans to strengthen its structure, engage youth and women in entrepreneurship, organize annual business expos, and support government efforts to reform investment-related laws. These actions will be crucial in realizing Vision 2040–2060: a Burundi that is self-reliant, prosperous, and globally competitive.
